The Jewws were a great garage-rock band from Houston featuring ex-members (Rebecca, and then eventually Matt) of Junior Varsity. They probably could have conquered the world had they gotten out of Houston and toured a bunch... But instead they left behind a legacy of great records, and this is one of them - their sole full length LP which came out in 2002 on Demolition Derby/Nitro! Records, out of Belgium. Rebecca is currently playing bass with The Hex Dispensers, while these days guitarist Omari is drumming in the Austin punk band The Stuffies as well as playing bass in Light Me Up.

If you're looking at this site, you should already be aware of this record and downloaded it elsewhere, as it's already been posted on every old KBD style music blog in the world... But, in the interest of covering all of the bases on this blog, here we go. There are many other sites which discuss the legacy of the Austin band The Huns much better than I could even attempt. Check out the in depth Break My Face site on The Huns for the backstory. I have some old Huns video which I obtained when working at Sound Exchange which I was thinking about uploading to youtube... But upon searching, it appears someone else has already uploaded the same show:

Anyway, back to the 7". This record has been bootlegged many, many times with a different, B&W xerox copied cover image from the infamous Raul's show of the vocalist being arrested being the most common. The image above is the original front cover of the record.

The Prima Donnas - Live On KVRX (UNEDITED EDITION!)

While sifting through all of the submissions that people have sent over the past year and realizing how behind I am on posting stuff, I found this gem. Back in 1997, Austin's (by the way of Sussex, UK) Prima Donnas played a live set in the studio of KVRX for their "Local Live" show, which was broadcast over the air. The band later released a CD of this performance (pictured above), and while the CD had some bonus songs and other things on it, it was unfortunately "cleaned up" for release, missing the between song talking and the interview which the band did live on air.

The recording posted here is the original broadcast, recorded straight off the radio, complete with all of the awkward between song banter and the great interview where they discuss Devo, Texas seceding, and the bands storied beginnings back in the UK. The person who calls in during the interview asking them to play "Whip It" sounds like old friend Seth Johnson... is it?

The Funhouse Show - Monday 10/28/1985

There are two things that I can point to from my youth that are responsible for me getting into punk rock:

1.) In the early/mid 80's, my older brother went away on a school debate trip, and came back with a bunch of LP's dubbed to cassettes that he had copied from a friend. This is how I first heard any punk/hardcore.

And:

2.) The Funhouse Show - Houston's weekly long running and much beloved punk rock radio show on the user supported Pacifica radio station 90.1 KPFT. I would listen to the Funhouse show every week, often on my Sony Walkman while laying in bed late at night when my mom thought I was sleeping since the show was on from midnight - 2am. Before I knew where to go to buy punk rock records, and before I was old enough to go to ANY shows, I had a weekly dose of punk and other weirdness delivered to me. I would often tape the show onto 90 minute tapes, usually not starting to tape until about 15 minutes in because the host of the show, Chuck Roast, would inevitably play some weird industrial crap to start the show which I (at the time) wouldn't like anyways. I knew that I couldn't fit the full 2 hours of the show on my 90 minute tape, so I would make sure that I stayed awake long enough that I could flip the tape over, listening to whatever I missed the following morning on the school bus on the way to school. The following afternoon I would compile all the good punk songs from the tape onto a second tape, making my own "Best Of Funhouse" tapes... some of which I still have to this day (the "Tape #7" pictured above is actually one of them). I would then tape over that weeks show the following week, and get a bunch of new stuff for my "Best of..." tape, and repeat.

The above process was great for getting into all these bands that I would have no way to hear otherwise, but in retrospect I wish I had the unadulterated tapes of these broadcasts. Luckily, I wasn't the only one taping the Funhouse show. And even more luckily, other people were smarter than me in that they sometimes taped the entire show and wouldn't tape over it later. I have collected about 10 different digitized funhouse broadcasts from various sources over the years, but most of them came from the "Houston Punk Archives" site 5 years or so ago. The HPA site has come and gone in recent months, and although it's not up as I type this, a message from the site dated 10 days ago says that it's coming back soon.

Anyways, this is the first of many installments of the Funhouse Show which i'll be putting up on the Texas Punk Treasure Chest. A little history of Chuck Roast and the Funhouse Show can be read HERE for those unfamiliar, a 1999 Houston Press article/interview with Chuck.

The Funhouse Show would eventually go off the air around 1989 or so, and I would remain a loyal customer of Chuck's record store and would later end up working there from 1990-1996. Vinal Edge Records still exists, continuing to offer the Houston northside punk, hardcore, and weirdo industrial noise records. Buy things from their web store HERE.

This episode of Funhouse, from Monday 10/28/1985, has plenty of the non-hits while having a "creepy" theme running throughout because it was just before Halloween. Even the most well rounded old punk/hardcore fan will here something on here that they're into, including but not limited to Misfits, Spastic Rats, Peter & The Test Tube Babies, Social Distortion, Controlled Bleeding, Tales Of Terror, Fang, No Trend, and Condemned to Death. With these old broadcasts, some of the most interesting parts (to me anyways) are the times when Chuck or the other DJ's speak, and this episode is no different. The concert calendar includes lots of talk about legendary Houston venue Cabaret Voltaire, mentions that Stark Raving Mad has an upcoming gig at Pik-N-Pak (!!!!!), shows from S.N.O.T., Bark Hard, Contortion Session, Fearless Iranians From Hell, and mentions the Party Owls Halloween bash that just happened the weekend before.

DL: The Funhouse Show - Monday 10/28/1985

As this was originally broadcast over the radio and taped to a cassette that probably sat in a cardboard box for 20 years before someone digitized it, the sound quality isn't great. This shouldn't keep you from checking this out, though, as it's really like ripping a page out of the Texas Punk history books.

Here's the third Motards single and probably the most recognized of them all as it was on Rip Off Records. Released in 1995, this one-sided single is a keeper. It has since been re-released on the Rip Off Records singles compilation vol 2, as well as on a Motards singles/rarities compilation CD/LP that came out a while back. This is totally classic for the cover alone: The infamous photo of the band pissing on the Stevie Ray Vaughn statue located at Austin's Town Lake.

This video (parts 1-3 here) was released in 1993 (i think) by a couple of young bored gentlemen from Louisiana. The video features live clips from the Texas bands Yuck and Macho Muchachos as well as many non-Texas bands and all kinds of other ridiculous things.

v/a: "Live At Raul's" Compilation

This LP came out in 1979 and showcased a handful of first wave Texas punk bands, all recorded live at Raul's in Austin. Per the wikipedia entry for this record, these performances were scheduled during the afternoon hours specifically for this recording, and as a result the crowd was very small resulting in an underwhelming "live" experience for the recording. The LP was re-issued on CD in 1995, and the re-issue included a couple bonus tracks from Rocky Erickson. This reissue is now out of print as well.

The building that was Raul's, which is at 2610 Guadalupe St in Austin, became the Texas Showdown Saloon after the closing of Raul's in 1981. Despite not regularly having live music, The Showdown became a much beloved Austin institution until it was forced to close in May of 2008 after losing the lease to the building. The tenants have changed owners a couple times since the Showdown, and along the way the newer tenants have made an attempt to preserve some of the history of the building (including a Raul's era- painting on a wall which was revealed during remodeling after The Showdown closed).

I know nothing about this CD, including how I got it. Information printed on the sleeve is minimal at best. The recording is decent, recorded live at Emo's in 1992. There are a mix of a few originals and mostly covers (The Mighty Caesars, Boys Next Door, The Yardbirds, The Wailers, Electric Eels, etc...) and the performance is pretty solid. All in all, it's a good snapshot from this popular Austin 90's garage rock band.

Dicks - "Kill From The Heart" LP

Catching up again on some of the more obvious classics is the absolutely great "Kill From The Heart" LP by the Dicks. Released in 1983, this was the last thing released by the original Texas line-up of the Dicks before Gary Floyd's move to California and the San Francisco line-up formed. This record, which is a classic in every sense of the word, is unfortunately out of print because supposedly the master tapes for the recording have been lost. The record has been bootlegged multiple times, and a few songs from it appear on the "1980-1986" CD compilation which Alternative Tentacles released in the late 90's.

The band is somewhat active after being broken up for years, playing the occasional show every now and then. These shows have featured the original Texas line-up minus deceased guitarist Glen Taylor, and instead with Davy Jones of the Hickoids fame in his place. A CD-R sold by the band at some of these recent shows contains a vinyl rip of this record along with some other out of print rarities.

Poison 13 - S/T LP

If I had to make a list of my favorite records of all time from Texas, this one would be up there. Really high. I mean, really, really up there. Why this record and this band seems to get a pass when discussing the best this state has ever had to offer is beyond me. To those unfamiliar, Poison 13 included a couple of ex-Big Boys members and played a brand of bluesy garage rock that would be imitated and duplicated for years to come. This LP was their first and came out in 1984. The band would eventually break up in 1987, but have played a number of reunion shows since, including the legendary Sound Exchange Records 20th anniversary show back on October 27th, 2000 with The Motards (yes, HERE). It's hard to believe that that was 10 years ago already.

Sub Pop Records released a Poison 13 discography CD sometime in the mid-90's which appears to be out of print and sells for highly inflated prices, like this one on Amazon priced at $217.23. People are crazy.

Pain Teens - "Death Row Eyes/The Smell" 7"

The Pain Teens were a weirdo/experimental noise rock band from Houston who existed from 1985 until sometime in the mid 90's. With their use of samples and tape loops over a wall of often psychedelic guitar based noise rock, they were a perfect fit for the noisy & weird early roster of Austin's Trance Syndicate records, and ended up releasing multiple full lengths on the label. In addition, they also had multiple releases on their own Anomie label, as well as singles on Rave, C/Z, Smilin' Ear, and this single, on Sub Pop Records. Reported to be limited to 3285 copies with 4 different colored vinyl versions, this was the May 1992 installment in the Sub Pop Singles Club and therefore immediately by default became a collectable and desirable piece of vinyl.

Nervebreakers - "We Want Everything" LP

The Nervebreakers were a 70's Dallas area punk band, notorious for opening for the Sex Pistols at the Longhorn Ballroom in Dallas in 1978 , for their tracks on the "Are We Too Late For The Trend?" compilation as well as for their unforgettable song "My Girlfriend Is A Rock" which would much later appear on the widely popular "Bloodstains Across Texas" compilation. This LP, recorded in 1980 wasn't released until 1994 long after the bands demise.

The Nervebreakers are playing this Saturday July 24th, 2010 as part of the Hot Klub 30th Anniversary celebration in Dallas! More information about that can be found HERE.

Hot Klub 30th Anniversary Show!

Continuing in what seems to be a series of each major city in Texas going through bouts of old punk rock nostalgia, Trees in Dallas will be hosting a HOT KLUB 30th ANNIVERSARY SHOW one week from today!

The HOT KLUB was a punk rock club in Dallas which existed from 1980 to 1983. Many, many local and tour punk bands shared the stage at the Hot Klub, as it was *the* destination for punk in Dallas during these years. The 30th Anniversary of the Hot Klub includes 5 bands from the original Texas punk/new wave scene, two bands featuring members of popular bands from that era, and one new-ish band.

Negative Step - "Conquering Punk" 10 inch

Negative Step were are short-lived but great Austin TX hardcore band featuring ex-members of Big Horny Hustler, Society Of Friends, Crown Roast/Rig, Tune In Tokyo, SAP, Rodan, Sunspring, and many others. More punk and less hardcore than Society Of Friends (of which August sang for both), yet still very fast and powerful. Negative Step would be around to release a demo tape, a split 7" with Pretty Little Flower and this 10" before disbanding. Members would later go on to be in Lords Of Light, Walls, TODD, Shit And Shine, Coconut Coolouts and others which I cannot think of right now.

Janitor were a Houston TX hardcore/punk band that formed in 1994 and existed until 2004. This record was their first - recorded in 1996 but not released until 1998, self released by the band, on green vinyl. The band released a demo tape and a few different 7" singles before disbanding, all of which are available on a discography CD on Plethorazine Records (which will be posted here eventually).

Janitor contained ex-members of the Suspects and future members of The P.M.R.C., The Magnetic IV, Le Thargic and The No No No Hopes, among others.

Junior Varsity - "Ice Cream Social" 7"

Primitive yet fun bubblegum 50's/60's frat garage-rock performed by a two guy, one girl trio in cheerleader outfits singing songs about hout rods, boys, ice cream, and mexican food restaurants?!? If you think that sounds like your idea of hell, you're amazingly wrong in this case. This 7" single was the first of many releases by Houston's Junior Varsity, and it's great. Featuring the "classic" first line-up of Kim, Matt and Sean, this single remains as a favorite from that mid-90's era of Houston bands.

Woah! When I pulled my copy of this record from the shelves and looked inside, I found a set-list from an old JV show:

Macho Muchachos - "DO" demo

Ohh, where to begin... The Macho Muchachos were an early 90's punk band from Lake Jackson, Texas containing future members of Juan, Blueprint, and 4th Grade Nothing, among others. This rough demo was recorded with their first line-up featuring Lasse on guitar (a foreign exchange student if I remember correctly). Later lineup/guitar player changes would change the sound of the Macho Muchachos drastically, eventually turing them into a more mature (both musically and lyrically (mature-time!)) and cohesive pop punk band. But, this is the only thing the band ever recorded, so you'll just have to trust me on that. Vocalist Shawn has since gone on to release a couple well received solo records on Emperor Jones Records and very recently on Tompkins Square Records.

I saw the Macho Muchachos many times way back when at Pik-N-Pak, the Axiom and various other Houston venues. The biggest show they every played was probably opening for Screeching Weasel at the Axiom in 1992. While this demo has not aged well over the years, it is still fun/funny to go back and listen to it nearly 20 years later.

"Hell Paso" was the first 7" single from At The Drive-In, from El Paso. Originally released in 1994 on the bands own Western Breed Records, this record is storied to have been funded using guitarist Jim Ward's personal college savings. I'll go out on a limb and say that he probably doesn't regret that decision.

The cat is out of the bag: ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead is the "Special Guest" headlining the Blue Flamingo Tribute Thursday April 29th, at Plush (formerly The Blue Flamingo). Blueprint reuniting for Alex Arizpe Benefit shows

It's been announced that there will be new benefit shows for Alex Arizpe, alumnus of Houston bands Badger, The Tie That Binds, Sore Loser, and Beast. When Alex was diagnosed with cancer in 2008, benefit shows were held in both Houston and Austin featuring a reunion of The Tie That Binds which helped raised money to offset the obviously costly treatment which Alex requires. 2010 brings the need for a second round of benefit shows, so his friends are once again stepping up to help.

This cassette compilation featured five of Austin's finest punk and hardcore bands circa 1995, as well as an oddly out of place track from Dan Bolton of the Supersuckers. This is notable as I *think* it was the first non-demo release for Carbomb, Dynamite Boy, and 4th Grade Nothing... all three of which would go on to relative amounts of popularity within their respective scenes. The Carbomb songs on here don't appear on any other release of theirs that I have, one of which is their great cover of the Wipers "Over The Edge" (don't let the Carbomb song titles fool you - they were given the names of two friends last names instead of their actual names).

Containing a member of Kodiak and a current member of Hello Lovers, The Surprise Party were together for a very short time playing only a handful of shows while they were around. Classic Houston punk from 1980. Much has been said about this one elsewhere with lots of firsthand knowledge to back it up. I remember the Houston Police "The Badge Means You Care" advertising campaign from when I was a kid growing up in suburban Houston, but had no idea of the anti-cop tirades going on at the time elsewhere in the city, as documented on this single. FuckEmos - "Can Kill You" CD

FuckEmos "Can Kill You" CD was originally released in 1994 on Rise Records, and then reissued (with the inferior cover image above) in 1998 on Man's Ruin Records. Originally named Warthog 2001, the band's frontman Russell would change the name to FuckEmos after a late night altercation with Emo's security. This release was their first full-length, a mess of Butthole Surfers influenced weirdness mixed with standard noiserock tunes. Later records would become cleaner sounding and lose some charm, but this record is considered a classic. After their demise, members were in a number of bands including USS Friendship and Babydick, among many others.

FuckEmo's will be part of the upcoming BLUE FLAMINGO REUNION, and will be playing a reunion show on Thursday April 29th @ Plush (aka the former location of the Blue Flamingo!!) More info about the Blue Flamingo Reunion/Tribute shows can be found HERE.

The Olive Group/Those Peabodys - split 7"

This split 7" came out in 2000, pairing the indie rock tuneage of the Olive Group with the rock'n'roll riffage of Those Peabodys for both bands first release. The Olive Group contained ex-Le Venga Del Toro and future members of Brothers And Sisters and Attack Formation (and it's many offshoots). Those Peabodys had many minor lineup changes over the years, but the core members contained ex-Radioland Hitsquad, Ursa Minor and, just like The Olive Group, future members of Attack Formation (and it's many offshoots). Both bands would eventually have CD releases on Post-Parlo Records, while Those Peabodys would also eventually record for Tiger Style Records out of New York.

Direction were a straightedge hardcore band from Austin, TX from the mid-90's. They existed for a few years, releasing this 7" single and a split 8" with Anomie. Direction members included longtime former Emo's booker and Transmission Entertainment founder Graham Williams as well as longtime Emo's and current Mohawk bartender Cody Cowan. Members would later resurface in the band New Year (the Austin hardcore band, not the band featuring ex-members of Bedhead).

Agitators were a Dallas area punk rock band whom I met after they played a show at The Axiom in Houston in probably 1991 or so. I instantly liked them, and they ended up being one of the bands who I interviewed for the first issue of my zine. Members of the band and I kept in touch, and I ordered this record immediately upon hearing from one of them that it had come out. I apparently stuffed the letter that their drummer Clint wrote me when sending the record, only to find it again the just the other day when I pulled this one off my shelf:

Musically, they kinda remind me now of Naked Raygun with a slightly more "rock'n'roll" edge. Other than this record, the band also had a song on the "Hardcore Breakout USA" compilation on New Red Archives records.

This compilation is comprised of mostly Texas bands with a few high profile non-Texas bands thrown in (most likely to entice non-Austinites to buy it), all recorded live at Emo's Austin to glorious ADAT. Why do I know it was recorded to ADAT? Because a band that I used to be in played one of the nights that some of these recordings were made (Nov 12th, 1993, the same night the Seaweed & Glorium tracks were recorded), and our entire set was recorded that night. We had hopes that we would be included on this comp, but didn't make the cut for obvious reasons. I still have one of the ADAT tapes from that show in a box buried in my closet somewhere.

That being said, this brings me to my next question: Did all the bands keep tapes of their shows, and do these exist somewhere? Is there an entire unreleased live Cherubs recording (or Gut? or American Psycho Band? or ANY of these bands?) out there somewhere, waiting to make it's way to the internet for all to enjoy? If so, i'd like to know.

This comp was a "who's who" of the late 80's Houston weirdo punk music scene, as well as a look into the future of Houston music to come. Released on the Pain Teens own Anomie Records, the LP not only (of course) has tracks by the Pain Teens, but also two other bands featuring various Pain Teens members (Non Dairy Creamers, Ms Carriage And The Casual Tease). In addition, you have the vinyl debut by the mighty Sugar Shack as well as tracks by Grindin' Teeth (featuring future members of Rusted Shut), Bayou Pigs (future members of Academy Black, Noodle, and The Paranoids), Dresden 45 (featuring renown poster artist Uncle Charlie), Blind Ignorants (of which one member would later form Spunk), and da Plug Uglies.

I went to the record release show for this comp at the Axiom and remember it quite fondly.

Excellent picture disc 7" from Gomez, released in 1995 on Scooch Pooch Records. This record really benefited from some good production by John Croslin as well as some great songwriting which helped give Gomez a more mature, full sound. I very distinctly remember Paul playing this for me and a couple other friends for the first time, just after it was recorded, in his car parked in the alley behind Emo's and being really impressed at the time by how great it sounded.

This band reminds me of Bob Ashley. I met Bob in Bryan/College Station, at one of the kickball shows (the one with Trigger and Carbomb). I had seen him around for years and knew who he was. He was the dude in the wheelchair that had a record label. I think he asked me about my Garden Variety shirt, got to talkin, and in the years before email, became instant pen pals. I remember (and still have) the first package I got from Bob. It contained a mixtape with some bands from Lake Jackson that he was either going to release records for, or had already released, and a letter that contained an answer to a question that I had asked in a previous letter.

The Question: "How do I start a record label?"
The Response: "Start Small"

The mixtape had a Boy Wonder demo, an Augustine Demo, and some others. But what got me excited at the time was the Pretty Boys Demo. Four songs of power pop similar to early Green Day, Right Turn Clyde, or 4th Grade Nothing. Lake Jackson punk. Members grew up to be other things, Terry (drummer) has been in several Austin bands (including Pretty the Quick Black Eyes, Markov).

Pretty Boys have recently gotten back together to play a few shows... And there might be some more. I got lucky to see them play a song with the singer from All last year.

Sixteen Deluxe were a psychedelic noisy pop band hailing from Austin. By no means have I ever claimed to be a huge Sixteen Deluxe fan, but i've always thought that the song "Idea" is a near perfect pop song. After releases on Trance Syndicate, Propeller, Genius, Warner Brothers, and Sugar Fix Records, the band broke up in the year 2000. This 7" was their vinyl debut.

It has been announced that Sixteen Deluxe will be doing reunion shows around SXSW this year, and this will coincide with Mark Fagan (Bayou Pigs, Noodle, the Paranoids) releasing a CD collecting the Sixteen Deluxe demo and some live material on his long-running label, Bunkhaus Records.

Dead Horse is the best metal band to ever come from Houston, and maybe even Texas. I was a high school aged kid living in Houston in the late 80's when I first discovered Dead Horse by listening to the Sweet Nightmares radio show on KPFT radio. At that point they had nothing but a demo out, and I was blown away upon first hearing them. Their unique brand of thrash/death metal was punk influenced enough to appeal to someone like me and my high school friends, and as a result I don't think I missed seeing one of their shows from when I first heard them in 1989 until sometime in 1991 or so (when they started playing songs that would end up on their second LP, I started losing interest). Their first LP, "Horsecore: An Unrelated Story That's Time Consuming" is great. More than 20 years after it's initial release, it still holds the test of time... something unheard of for a thrash metal record.

A couple years ago I started posting some random videos on youtube that I had digitized, some of which I had taped myself, and a Dead Horse video was one of the first ones I put up. At the time, there was little to no Dead Horse on youtube, which I though was a shame, so I uploaded the following video. Despite the subpar quality of the video, it's quickly approaching 25,000 views, and i've since received countless emails asking for a copy of the entire show from which it was taken.

The original version of this record was self-released in 1989 by the band. Relapse Records re-released this record as well as their 2nd LP in 1999, but both of those releases have since gone out of print. The re-release of "Horsecore..." included their first demo as well as one other song, but i'll be posting the demo in a separate post with it's own artwork at a later date. This post only includes the original LP, which is how I believe it should be heard anyway.

Four high school kids from a north suburb of Houston made up the Stalag Seventeen. I remember hearing stories of their singer, Rich, being a weird eccentric and saying inappropriate things while they played. Totally true.

One of my favorite memories of running a label was meeting these kids, putting out their record, and getting to go on tour with them during the summer of 1998.

"Dischord from Texas" was what the flyer said in Pensacola, Fl. I can live with that. Members went on to the Entertainment System, Vietnam, Masculine/Feminine and The Dugat Project.

The Fatal Flyin' Guilloteens debut vinyl release, released on my own label, Twistworthy Records. This spastic Houston garagepunk band would later release records for a number of different labels, including Peek-A-Boo, Estrus, GSL, and Frenchkiss, adding members and changing their sound a bit along the way. The band was named "The Fatal Flyin' Guilloteens" on this record as well as the Peek-A-Boo 7", both recorded with their classic 3-piece line-up. While I don't know if this was a conscious decision, it was only once they decided to get a bass player with the release of their 3rd 7", on Estrus Records, that the name changed to simply "Fatal Flying Guilloteens".

An interesting thing to note about this record: There was a delay in finishing the cover design, long after the vinyl had been pressed, and I grew increasingly impatient. I was poor, working in a record store and basically living paycheck to paycheck, and I needed to sell these records... So, I personally hand-silkscreened a limited run of 50 (I think?) hand numbered covers with the "Guilloteen" logo design on the front (which would end up later being the same image that would later grace the cover of their Peek-A-Boo Records single), probably to help pay for my rent or car insurance or something. I sold out of these quickly, and only kept one single copy for myself. I personally don't own a copy of this with the alternate cover anymore - the one copy that I had kept I ended up giving to a girlfriend years ago. I distributed the copies between 4 Austin record stores - Sound Exchange, 33 Degrees, Stashus Mule, and Waterloo Records... So it's doubtful that many people outside of Austin would have or have ever seen this version. I know it's a total long shot, but if anyone has a copy or can find a copy of the record with the white silkscreened cover which I can have or purchase, I would be forever grateful.

"¡Alfaro Vive, Carajo!" is the second 7" EP by El Paso's At the Drive-In, self-released by the band in 1995 on their own label, Western Breed Records. The band line-up during the 1994-95 era of the band (when both this record and their first 7" were recorded) included Kenny Hopper, who would later move to Austin and be in the bands 100 Watt Clock and The Hades Kick, both of which can be found elsewhere on this blog. The band would later, albeit with a slightly different line-up, release records on Flipside, Off Time, Fearless, and eventually achieve some mainstream recognition with a release on Grand Royal/Capitol Records. A CD version of this EP was released with an additional song which is not included here.

Fearless Iranians From Hell were not actually from Hell, but rather from San Antonio. They were often clouded in mystery, as the records gave no credits, had no photos of the band, and contained nothing but pro-Islam & anti-American songs and images. While they had a few line-up changes throughout their tenure, at various points the band was made up of members of Marching Plague, Butthole Surfers, Prenatal Lust, and Toejam. They recorded 3 LP's and 1 7", each release being a little more metal-influenced then the previous. This single was their first, and is absolutely a classic.

While this 7" is long out of print, the songs remain available to purchase from iTunes, Amazon, and some other online services. Therefore, this DL link will only be available for a limited time.

Pre-Rhythm of Black Lines. Mathy indie-rock similar to Chisel or Blonde Redhead. Insound says: "vaguely resemble moments of: U2, boys life, the doors, and brian eno.", but I dont get that at all.

As a middle-school aged kid into skating and punkrock the mid 80's in Houston, I first heard the song "Competition Skank" by the Party Owls on the Funhouse Radio show (Houston's longrunning punk/weirdo radio show on KPFT listener sponsored public radio), but for years I didn't know it was the Party Owls. I used to tape Funhouse every week, and then consolidate all of the songs that I thought were good onto one single tape, creating my own "best of Funhouse" tape. Many songs would end up on these tapes without me knowing who the bands were, and "Competition Skank" was one of these songs. It wasn't until a few years later, then in high school, that I heard it again when a friend unknowingly taped this 7" in it's entirety for me, and the mystery was solved.

Members of the Party Owls went on to later form Sugar Shack. Lance Rock/Ecstatic Peace released a Party Owls 12" in 1999, but it doesn't match the greatness of this single.

Great split 7" from Gut and Glorium, released on Powernap Records out of Houston. The first pressing of this record had a pressing defect on the Gut side causing it to skip about 40 seconds in. I don't recall HOW it happened, but it resulted in hundreds of records being pressed with the defect. Crafty people figured out that the record wouldn't skip if you placed a quarter on top of your record stylus, weighing it down. A subsequent pressing of the record corrected the issue. The original version that I have was distributed with a yellow inner paper sleeve (matching the color of the cover) on black vinyl, while the re-press was on marbled grey vinyl with a plain white inner sleeve.

I never got to see On Earth As It Is, so I cannot write much about them. Decent recording of Austin Hardcore from the mid-90s. Kinda reminds me of Burn at times...metal riffs and breakdowns. Members went on to Ignorance Park and Blunt Force Trauma (among others). Also, on vocals was the legendary Dustin Poyner(RIP).

Dig Dug played through the Houston scene though the late 90s before disbanding. Fifteen (the band) inspired pop punk with dueling vocals. They released several Eps and comp tracks though this time. Sadly, I do not have a track list, but one might be able to be procured if anyone wants it. Members went on to the Business Machines and Young Machete, and shared a member with Sore Loser and BEAST.

It's criminal that it's taken this long to have Glorium represented here. A mainstay of the 90's Texas scene, early Glorium fused Sonic Youth-ish art-swagger with DC punk mythos to create something truly unique and exciting. Members went on to play in I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness, Kingdom Of Suicide Lovers, and Sexto Sol, among others.

Brick was powerviolence before powerviolence was cool, featuring an all-star cast of members which sometimes included members of CarBomb, Kid's Meal, Gomez, Minority, Paul Newman, 100WattClock and others. Unlike most hardcore in this vein, the songs actually had hooks. Great stuff.

The Motards: Loved by many, hated by... many. The songs from this single, their first, were supposedly taken from their demo.
